About us

A member promotes SMASH for Aphasia Week
The SMASH group was formed by a group of people with aphasia with the help of a local speech therapist. Our first chairman and founder member is the longest surviving member of the group and is presently our secretary.
Since its foundation, the SMASH group has continued to welcome new members and to provide a friendly and supportive environment for members with aphasia.

A SMASH meeting
The SMASH group is entirely self sufficient and survives without the help of carers or volunteers. We believe and the ethos of the group is to encourage the members towards recovery from the effects of aphasia by becoming self reliant.
SMASH is now one of the oldest established and surviving groups in the country and continues through its activities to raise awareness of aphasia and to campaign for a better understanding of aphasia.
SMASH is affiliated to Speakability – a national charity campaigning for people with language disorders. We attend their Conferences and Regional Forums.
Our present Chairman is a former Trustee of Connect – The communication disability network. He and other members of the group have been involved in working parties and therapy groups at Connect.
