Leo Clarke holding the award

The SMASH (Sutton & Merton Aphasia Self Help) Group has been awarded first prize in this years Media Trust Communications Awards 2005 which is promoted by the Bridge House Trust Fund. The award was presented to its secretary Leo Clarke at its annual award ceremony held in the Guildhall, London on Friday 6 May 2005.

It is particularly encouraging for SMASH to win this award since it has been won by people whose disability is a communication disability named aphasia. The award will greatly help and facilitate the organization's aims and objectives, which is to promote awareness of aphasia and promote the aims and objectives of SMASH, which is to encourage people with aphasia to help themselves and others to reintegrate with life and society following their injury.

As a result of workshops run by the Media Trust and the Bridge House Trust, SMASH has been enabled and encouraged to create a new logo, leaflets design, letterheading, envelopes and its own web site targeted towards people with aphasia and health professionals. With the additional funding received they hope to boost even greater awareness through the medium of media tools and techniques.
